Description

The Dunedin Botanic Garden is New Zealand's first botanic garden and holds the status of six star Garden of International Significance. There is carparking access down Cumberland Street North and Lovelock Avenue. Opening hours of the garden change depending on season, earliest available bookings are allowed from 10am and latest a person must finish their booking is 1 hour prior to the posted gate closure. There is strictly no vehicle access into the botanic garden. Spaces listed are bookable for weddings or community events, but are not available for commercial events or any other private functions such as birthday parties. If you would like to book a space in the garden not listed below, please email botanic@dcc.govt.nz.

Available for Bookings:

  • Next to the upper botanic garden toilets and carpark, the azalea garden has capacity for about 70 people. October to November is peak flowering time.
  • At the centre of the Rhododendron Dell, peak flowering time is between September and October. The open area at the south end is available. Maximum comfortable capacity is 20 people.
  • This large, triangle shaped lawn slopes down towards the city and has a view of the hills. It can fit a large wedding party and is about a 100 metre walk from the upper garden carpark.
  • This is located at the South End of the Lower Garden. The peak time is during the entirety of the summer season. There is a limit of 20 people.
  • The large lawn between the herb garden and information centre is surrounded by the camellia borders. It can take a large number of wedding guests.
  • Separated from the upper native lawn, this one is slightly sloped and holds about 60 people.
  • Adjacent to upper Lovelock Avenue, this is enjoyed all year round and holds about 70 people. It is about a 100 metre walk from the upper garden carpark.
  • In a secluded corner of the botanic garden, this gently sloping lawn holds about 100 people.
  • In the lower centre of the botanic garden, the rose garden has no open area but paths can be used. Maximum capacity is 10 people. Peak flowering time is between November and late February.
  • This open space is close to Great King St and surrounded by specimen trees and can take a large number of wedding guests.
  • This lawn holds 80 people and is only a few metres walk from the lower botanic garden carpark.
  • At the north end of the lower botanic garden, this area is suited to a party of no more than 40 people.
